Manuel Calderon de la Barca
Manuel Calderón de la Barca Sánchez is from Mexico City. He is a scientific researcher and professor in the field of high-energy heavy ion collisions, where he has over 25 years of experience doing experiments at CERN, the European Laboratory for Nuclear and Particle Physics, and at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Long Island, NY. He is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UC Davis. He is keen to communicate science to broad audiences. He is the scientific advisor, narrator, and featured scientist of the IMAX film “Secrets of the Universe”, which explores how scientists study the quark soup that existed a millionth of a second after the Big Bang using the largest collider in the world. He is an enthusiastic educator, receiving the UC Davis Distinguished Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 2013. He has a longstanding commitment to increasing diversity in STEM. He has continued to open opportunities for Latinos and women to be involved in the STEM fields in general, and in Physics in particular. He is a supporter of the performing arts, dance, and music, and believes that ITA's work is a powerful medium not only of cultural expression, but also of connection between us as humans. The power of storytelling through music and dance merged in the vision of Milton Williams and Ananda Bena-Weber can be a moving, transformative, and inspirational experience that deserves to be brought to life.
